How to Create an Extra Credit Column in the Gradebook

Purpose: For instructors who grade by points and would like to provide separate extra credit to their students, may create a separate assignment column to allot extra points to a student’s grade. The students will be able to see this column when created, but it will add additional points to their final grade/score.

**For extra credit on a course assignment, the instructor should allot additional points to the student’s earned score in that assignment’s grade column. See resources for more details.

How to Create Extra Credit with a Weighted Grade System

Purpose: For instructors who grade by weighted grades, an additional Assignment Group can be created in a Canvas course to allot a percentage cap of extra credit to students’ total grades. Regular assignments with point values must be created and placed into this group, then scored accordingly to correctly allot the extra credit. However, please be sure to put in the extra credit last so the final grade distributes correctly.

**With this option, students will see an “Extra Credit” Assignment Group in their grade link with the percentage and average score. Currently, there is no way to hide this.

How to Set up Peer Reviews for Discussions

Purpose: Peer Reviews in Discussions function similarly to Peer Reviews for online assignments. Students will still initially post their thoughts relating to the discussion prompt. However, they will additionally provide comments and possibly rubric scores on their classmates’ posts. Rules and examples should be provided by instructors on how peer reviews must be completed for optimum feedback and participation.

**Rubric scores from peers will not populate into a student’s assignment grade. The instructor must provide the grade themselves for a student to earn credit. In addition, grades cannot be automatically allotted to completed peer reviews. Instructors must create a separate, no submission, graded assignment to enter scores.

How to Set Assignment Late Policies in New Gradebook

Purpose: New Gradebook has a feature that automatically calculates scores for students with missing or late assignments. These settings must be enacted by the instructor for each class. Please be sure to inform students of these grading policies to avoid confusion when Canvas flags and calculates their submissions directly after due dates have passed.

**Be careful of creating “Make-up Work” assignments as students who do not complete this assignment will be flagged as “late” with a 0 being added to their scores.**

How to Create Quiz - Quiz Prompts [i.e. Text (No Question)]

Purpose: Instructors wanting to create an initial written, document, image, or media-based prompt can use the “Text (no question)” quiz question. This type of question is great to use when students need to show comprehension through provided materials such as videos, audios, or readings. Comprehension questions relating to the prompt should follow after, but remind students to refer to the prompt in order to successfully complete the quiz.

Please make sure to consider how much time will be required for students to complete the quiz when setting time limits, which includes interacting with the material and answering the questions after.

How to Copy Canvas to Canvas Course - Selecting Specific Content

Purpose: Instructors can copy materials over from one Canvas course to another, by electing to import “specific content”. This allows only certain items to be carried over if separate items are being developed or reused from a previous Canvas course. Some examples may be a single assignment, quiz, or file. Please make sure all items are attached to the content being copied over, whether it is a file or link to another site, to ensure proper access by students.
