How to Upload and Organize Files

Purpose: The “Files” menu in a Canvas course is the home for all file documents uploaded into Canvas. Use this space to organize course files and avoid uploading copy files. Organizing this space will make it easier, as the instructor, to locate files when uploading or linking them into a Canvas page, the Rich Content Editor, or a module.

**Avoid uploading media files into Canvas as there is a space limit of 2GB. It is best to upload media to an online streaming site, such as ASU’s MediaAMP, so media can be shared by links. This method will not take space from a course.

How to Create an Online Submission Assignment

Purpose: Instructors will organize their graded assignments from the “Assignment” link in the Course Navigation. Published assignments will then automatically sync into the Canvas Gradebook for instructors to add grades and provide feedback.

Online submission-type assignments, specifically, allow students to submit work for instructors online, through Canvas. Then, instructors can have digital forms of work without the need to download and clutter their desktop memory.

**Once students submit to an assignment, the instructor CANNOT unpublish it

**Graded discussions or quizzes will automatically drop into the “Assignments” section, but should be created in their respective sections (“Discussions” or “Quizzes” via the Course Navigation links).

How to Drop Assignment Scores

Purpose: Dropping grades allows instructors to provide another method of grade curving for students. However, dropping assignment scores is most affective when grades are divided into Assignment Groups.

**The following process picks an assignment at random relating to the field selected. If an instructors chooses to pull a specific assignment from a course’s final grade, they should turn on the assignment setting “Do not count this assignment towards the final grade”.

**Only assignments that have grades entered will have their score dropped. It will not count assignments with no grades in them.

How to Create a Question Group and Link or Add Questions

Purpose: Question Groups are used to generate question randomization on Canvas quizzes. In addition, it can choose a number of questions to randomize so different quiz versions can be automatically created for each student.

**Question Groups can only pull questions and randomize from a set of questions or one Question Bank. It cannot selectively pick an amount of question types like 3 multiple choice and 3 fill-in-the-blank question. Separate Question Groups and Question Banks must be created for this to be possible.**

**It is recommended to create and link Question Banks to a question group as individual questions built in a quiz CANNOT be copied over to another quiz.**

How to Export Final Grades to PeopleSoft

Purpose: Instructors can use the “Export Final Grades to PeopleSoft” link in Canvas to import their grades from their course into the PeopleSoft Grade Roster. This feature converts grades from the “Total” grade column in the gradebook into finalized letter grades. Please enable and check the grade scheme in “Course Details” via the “Settings” link to ensure the correct letter displays for the students’ grades. After following the process, letter grades will still be editable through “Grade Roster” before an instructor officially posts their finalized grades.

**Only instructors on record for a course can complete this process**

**Make sure grades have been entered for all students. Grades where students are excused from a score should have “EX” in their grade box for the letter grades to populate correctly with this feature. Otherwise they will be counted as 0 scores**

**If the “Export Final Grades to PeopleSoft” link is missing from your Course Navigation, you may add it from “Settings” > “Navigation”. Please see resources on how to customize your Course Navigation menu.**
